The Magic of Metaphors
Friday, May 22, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm · Carnegie Learning Centre
Most of us understand a metaphor when we see one. “My sweetheart is a rose,” “He’s a pig,” “It’s raining bricks.” Metaphors create connections. They bring together two or more unrelated things in order to make us think about things in fresh ways. Sometimes, a perfect metaphor can be so powerful that it makes us stop, scratch our heads, and think more deeply about how we understand the nature of a thing and our usual perceptions. Metaphors belong in every writer’s toolkit. In this workshop, we’ll discover the magic of metaphors and why you might want to include them in your own writing. We’ll consider the nuts and bolts of how metaphors work, discuss examples in literature, and then craft our own.
