Everyday Voices, Extraordinary Writing

*for self-identified women only*
Friday, May 22, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm · Carnegie Learning Centre

In this workshop, we’ll experiment with the ways in which ordinary speech is a rich research material capable of suggesting new ways of approaching writing. We’ll explore the signposts of oral speech, look to voice-inspired writing and write pocket-size pieces inspired by the voices in our lives. We’ll also do a couple of brief exercises on craft (dialogue, subtext).

ANNE STONE (she/they)

Anne Stone is a queer writer, teacher, and editor living in Vancouver. Stone’s fourth novel, Girl Minus X (Wolsak & Wynn, 2020), tells the story of Dany, a girl with an eidetic memory and a traumatic past who must navigate a world in which a slow creeping virus erodes memory. Stone taught creative writing in a prison classroom at the Fraser Valley Institute as part of Capilano University’s Bridge-to-Prison program—which brings together campus-based and incarcerated students.
